Parents, teachers, clergy, and Sunday school leaders frequently remark on how children amaze them by the ways they wonder over their world and reveal that life and movement we call ‘spirituality’. Few of us who’ve noticed this, though, have had a chance to reflect on this mysterious and often humbling dynamic.

This short course equips both parents and those of us privileged to work with children in any capacity to understand, respect, and facilitate the spirituality of the young and very young. In the process, we shall also find that honouring a child’s spirituality helps us honour our own more fully.

Our six, weekly classes include an introduction to Children’s Spirituality, Spiritual Styles, the Development of Faith, Generational Theory, and Worship, along with an introduction to Godly Play. We shall also have time to consider how we interact with children with special needs, especially those on the autistic spectrum.

The course is led and taught by Ronni Lamont, an acknowledged expert in the field of Children’s Spirituality. A number of guest teachers will join her, including Rebecca Nye, the author of Children’s Spirituality: What It Is and Why It Matters (Church House Publishing, 2009); Murray Wilkinson, the Canterbury Diocese Children’s and Youth Ministry Adviser; and Mary Hawes, National Youth Advisor for the Church of England.

Ronni Lamont works for the Diocese of Canterbury as Faith and Nurture Advisor. A freelance writer and facilitator, Ronni’s books include ‘Understanding Children Understanding God (SPCK 2007). Prior to ordination, Ronni taught Science in Nottinghamshire Comprehensive schools.

Those wishing to take this course for professional development may undertake an optional assignment. This will be an assessed piece of critical reflection, together with an analysis of one piece of children’s work undertaken during the time of the course. Anyone registered for the course is welcome to complete the assessed assignment.
