Julia Cernoch

After studying Law at Cambridge, Julia spent the early years of her career working as a corporation tax adviser in Prague (which had recently emerged from Communism) and then London. After taking time off to focus on her three children, Julia began her theological studies during the Zoom years at St Augustine’s. 

Julia is now a Reader, licensed in both Southwark and Canterbury Dioceses, serving at St John’s West Wickham and in the Wantsum Benefice in Thanet.

A keen linguist, Julia learnt five languages at school and more recently poured her energy into studying biblical Hebrew and New Testament Greek. The more she examined the languages in which the Bible was originally written, the more cautious she became about asserting that ‘the Bible definitely says this’. 

She recently completed an MA in Biblical Studies, and her dissertation focused on the meaning of four words in Mark 7:29.

Julia’s youngest son has severe non-speaking autism, and as a result she also has a keen interest in disability theology. In her spare time she enjoys Flamenco dancing and Pilates, visiting National Trust and English Heritage properties, and, above all, tackling her numerous piles of as-yet-unread theological books.
