Call for Conference Submissions

About the conference
As corporations, governments, and universities invest billions of dollars in AI, making promises both utopian and dystopian, much media, political, and popular discussion operates on reductionist notions of human and artificial intelligence.
‘Second wave’ AI research has tried to reflect more nuanced accounts of intelligence that attend to, for instance, the interpretation of context; the role of action in creating concepts; and cognition as dependent on bodily engagement with an environment.
Despite this enrichment, public discourse continues to reflect ‘thinned out’ notions of intelligence, derived from projects of psychological measurement, historically implicated in racism and classism.
We invite papers from a range of disciplines, including:
- Psychology
- Cognitive science
- Anthropology
- History of science
- Theology
- Philosophy
- STS
- Semiotics
We welcome contributions that discuss broader dimensions of ‘intelligence’, as variously identified within cultural, religious, scientific, and artistic traditions.
Our goal is to enable productive critique of ‘intelligence’ as currently understood in both the public sphere and AI research. This conference is particularly interested in the ‘intelligence’ – or intelligences – now called for in consequence of our environmental crisis.
Submission Guidelines
We welcome 20-minute or 45-minute submissions from a range of approaches and perspectives, and we encourage imaginative and innovative strategies for presentation/discussion.
- 20-minute papers: proposals should not exceed 250 words
- 45-minute papers: proposals should not exceed 500 words
- All submissions should include the author’s name and, where appropriate, institution
- Please also include a brief biography (max 150 words)
