An induction day at St Augustine’s Theology College

What is it really like to study theology at St Augustine’s College of Theology?

We asked the question to former and current students on our Facebook page, and the responses came flooding in.

Most of those who replied completed ordained ministry training here and now serve as ordained ministers – others came as Readers or as independent theology students. Here’s what they told us, in their own words.

‘I chose St Augustine’s for its inclusiveness and diversity among students.’

Ask almost any theology student what stays with them, and the answer is often the same: the people.

Ordained minister Bernard Eaton came to St Augustine’s as an ordinand when the Diocese of Chelmsford sponsored him:

‘I chose St Augustine’s for its inclusiveness and diversity among students and staff, which was crucial to my formation as a priest. I formed strong bonds with others and experienced a wide range of worship styles. Previously, such differences often seemed to divide people, but at St Augustine’s, they foster a beautiful cohesion. I’ll always treasure my time there, where everyone is welcome in Christ’s name.’

Ministry training: ‘I have made lifelong friends’

Carly Taylor trained for ordained ministry at the West Malling campus and was ordained last year:

‘The college was all I had hoped it would be and more! I found it to be an inclusive space that genuinely welcomed people from all traditions. It was a safe space where I was able to learn from others who thought differently to myself. I have made lifelong friends.’

Judy Douglas agrees: ‘A great place to study, and I have made lifelong friendships,’ and Deborah Annells adds: ‘It’s a wonderful place. Enjoy every minute there.’

Training people to become Ordained Ministers

One of the things students value most is the breadth of worship they experience here. Ordained Minister Lynn Holley found it shaped her confidence in ministry:

‘I loved my time at St Augustine’s. We were given experience of worship styles right across the Anglican spectrum. This has been so useful as it means that I am at ease wherever I find myself. I also made some wonderful friendships.’

Sara-Jane Stevens loved the diversity of the community she trained alongside:

‘Surrounded by and immersed in a cohort diverse in tradition, churchmanship, personality, life experience and denomination, I grew in at least 4 dimensions! I don’t hesitate to recommend St Augustine’s!’

Heather Wilkin: ‘I really enjoyed the diversity of students and worship. And the study modules were great!’

‘An amazing experience’: independent theology study

In addition to ordained ministry training, St Augustine’s welcomes independent students and Readers across a wide range of theology courses, from short taster terms to undergraduate and postgraduate study.

Independent student Chris Morgan, who trained at the London Bridge campus, puts it simply:

‘An amazing experience with great staff and students.’

High-quality theology study: ‘I soaked up the teaching like litmus’

The quality of teaching comes through strongly in what students say. Ordained minister Jane Barker trained here a few years ago:

‘St Augustine’s made me what I am. An awesome place to study and a privilege to be a part of the college.’

Sarah Diane threw herself into studying theology:

‘I soaked up the teaching like litmus. Couldn’t get enough of it. Loved the grounds, my colleagues, the staff, the passion for God, for the spiritual.’

Flexible theology courses and Reader Training designed to fit your life

For many students, the ability to fit study around an existing job or family commitments draws them to study at St Augustine’s.

Reader Victoria Friedrich completed Licensed Lay Ministry Training and valued the flexibility:

‘The option to learn online was incredibly valuable. It opened up Reader Training to those living further afield and to those balancing study with full-time work or other commitments, making the course more accessible and inclusive.’

You can study at the West Malling campus in Kent, the London Bridge campus in Southwark, or entirely online. For most undergraduate courses, you don’t need recent academic experience to apply, and bursaries are available for those who need financial support.

Helping students study theology to the best of their ability

Daphne Clifton completed Ministry Training at our rural West Malling campus in Kent:

‘I enjoyed the camaraderie and having an essay tutor who encouraged me to get past old school fears towards a new freedom, which gave me the courage to extend my learning to degree standard.’
