Study theology virtually with new online Certificate programme

The study of theology is about understanding and expanding our faith. Now, you can study theology from wherever you are locally, nationally, or globally.

With St Augustine’s College of Theology, you’ll take one of our most popular courses entirely online: the Certificate of Higher Education in Theology, Ministry and Mission

Accredited by Durham University, the new online-only Certificate of Higher Education (CertHE) in Theology, Ministry and Mission programme explores a range of theological disciplines.

You’ll study modules that get to the heart of the core beliefs and practices of the Christian faith. Over this two-year programme, you’ll develop your own faith-based perspective on aspects of faith, theology and daily life.

Taught entirely via Zoom classes, the programme follows the same curriculum as the original CertHE course, but utilises engaging online classes.

Anyone who’s interested in studying theology can apply for the Online Certificate in Higher Education in Theology, Ministry and Mission.

Because the entire course is taught online, you don’t need to be based near either of our campuses. You can apply for and study this course from anywhere in the world, as long as you have a certain level of fluency in English and can attend virtual classes on Wednesdays at 6:30pm (18:00) GMT.

This online programme is designed to be academically accessible; you do not need to have prior or recent experience of studying at university level. However, we generally recommend that applicants have two A-Levels at grade E or higher, or equivalent qualifications.

If you’re in a diocesan programme and looking to explore your motivation and aptitude for theological study, this course could also be a great choice for you.

Choosing to engage in theological study can be one of the most rewarding and life-changing experiences you can hope to have.

As a theology college, we often talk about the process of formation through theological study. Formation is an intentional, personal journey of change; it’s deep work, in which you strive to become who God has created you to be.

Alongside academic learning, studying theology involves a lot of personal, transformational work. By exchanging insights and knowledge with people who comes from different backgrounds and have unique perspectives, you’ll shape your beliefs and develop your critical understanding.

The involvement of other people is critical. St Augustine’s is home to a richly diverse and welcoming student community – and by studying theology online, you become a member of that community.

Just because you’re learning online, doesn’t mean you’re doing it alone. You’ll engage with and learn alongside your fellow students, supporting and challenging one another through your own unique formational journeys.

We understand that while academic study is exciting, it’s not always easy and straightforward to be able to write in an academic style.

That’s why we provide comprehensive student support that’s there to help you. You can access help with learning how to write essays and develop your writing style, and get personal pastoral support if life gets complicated.

As part of our commitment to making theological study accessible to all, we aim to offer effective support for students who are neurodivergent or have learning differences.

This support could involve being allowed extra time to hand in coursework, working with our dedicated writing tutor via online sessions, or other forms of support. We work with you to find out what you need and do our best to support you in a way that suits you best.

You can apply for the online CertHE now via our application form. Once you are accepted, your course will begin in September 2023.
