Welcome to our first blog post exploring Ignatius of Loyola, a former soldier who became one of history’s most influential religious figures.

Born in 1491 in Spain, Ignatius started his career on the battlefield but was badly injured.

During his recovery, Ignatius reflected on his life and the kind of person he wanted to be.  Instead of returning to fight, Ignatius dedicated his life to God, creating the Society of Jesus in 1534, known today as the Jesuits.

The Jesuits focused on education, helping others and guiding people in their spiritual journeys. They still do this today as followers of Ignatian spirituality but on a much larger, worldwide scale.

What are the main teachings of Ignatian spirituality?

One of Ignatius’s biggest contributions is the Spiritual Exercises. It’s a practice that combines prayers, reflections and meditations to help people grow spiritually and make better life choices.

The practical and simple exercises help you reflect on your values and decisions. While they’re traditionally done over 30 days, you can adapt them to your own pace to fit around your current commitments.

These exercises are all about taking time to think deeply, pray and gain clarity. By understanding what makes you feel calm or unsettled, you can make decisions that feel right to you.

Why is Ignatius so respected?

Ignatius wasn’t just a spiritual guide; his founding of the Jesuits influenced education and social justice. The Jesuits also became education leaders, opening schools, universities and training venues all over the world.

The Jesuits were also deeply involved in missionary work and still are today. They helped people in need, spreading Christianity to countries in Asia, Africa and the Americas.

How many people follow Ignatius’s teachings?

There are over 16,000 Jesuits across 100 countries, but millions of people, regardless of their faith, now use the Spiritual Exercises to improve their lives.

Ignatian spirituality is popular because it’s practical. You don’t have to be deeply religious to benefit from it. The exercises are about becoming more mindful and reflective, which can help you in many areas of your life.

How can you practice Ignatian spirituality?

Here are a few ways to apply Ignatius’s teachings to your daily life:

Daily reflection

Spend a few minutes each day thinking about what made you feel good or bad. This simple practice, known as the Examen, can help you understand your emotions and reactions and what brings you joy and causes stress.

Decision-making

When facing a difficult decision, consider which option makes you feel comfortable. Ignatius believed inner peace was a sign you were on the right track.

Finding meaning in everyday life

Ignatius taught that you can find meaning or connect with God in the small things, such as through nature, your work, or your relationships.  Being mindful of these moments can help you live with greater purpose.

If you want to grow spiritually or find inner peace, Ignatian spirituality can offer effective ways to help you live your life with more meaning and purpose.
