St Augustine’s Day Lecture – Creatures among Creatures – Thursday 14 May 2026
We’re excited to welcome Dr David Clough, Chair of Theology and Applied Sciences at the University of Aberdeen, for a day lecture at St John’s, Waterloo on Thursday, 14 May 2026.
David argues that Christian theology frequently fails to do justice to a key element of Christian orthodoxy. If there is one God and God is the creator of all things, then everything that exists is a beloved creature of God.
But Christian theology and ethics often seem unable to see beyond human interests and concerns, functioning as if God were instead the local deity of members of the species Homo sapiens, or a subset of it.
Recognising that we do theology as creatures among creatures is an important reparative first step. The implications of taking this recognition seriously in both theology and ethics are far-reaching, not least in requiring us to rethink our practice towards fellow animal creatures.
