The Christmas season should be a time of peace, but it can often feel stressful and full of expectation.
With so much present buying, cooking and socialising, it’s easy to forget why we’re celebrating. So, how can you, as a Christian, keep calm as Christmas approaches?
And how can you recharge your spiritual battery?
Our blog post covers some simple ways to stay grounded so you can enjoy the festive season!
Say “no” more often
One of the biggest causes of Christmas anxiety is the feeling that you must say “yes” to every invite and make the most of every opportunity – but when it impacts your well-being, it’s time to say ‘no.’
Work parties, nights out with friends, church events — it’s too easy to cram in too much, resulting in a packed calendar that gives you no wiggle room.
Turning down a few invites gives you time to rest, reflect and enjoy the season.
Light a candle
Sometimes, the easiest actions can bring the most peace.
Light a candle each evening and sit quietly for a moment. Let its glow remind you that Jesus is the light of the world. This small ritual can help you refocus on the reason for Christmas whenever you put too much pressure on yourself. Use this moment to pray or just sit in stillness.
Breath deeply
Long queues, packed venues and the burden of choice can make the calmest people feel out of their depth. Wherever you are, when you feel stressed, pause and take a few deep breaths.
Breathe in deeply, hold for a few seconds and release. This small exercise can instantly calm your body and mind, helping you feel in control and free to live in the moment.
Practice contemplative prayer
If your mind constantly races with endless to-do lists, then quiet, contemplative prayer is the perfect remedy.
Find a calming spot – a quiet cafe, church or library if you’re out and about – close your eyes and focus on a simple word or phrase like “peace.” When other thoughts pop up, gently let them go and return to your word.
Things don’t need to be perfect
The perfect Christmas doesn’t exist, despite what Christmas films and social media might suggest.
Let go of the need to host Christmas drinks, cook the best festive food or gift dazzlingly thoughtful presents. Sometimes, the best memories come from the little things, like laughter with friends or enjoying a wintery walk.
Spend time with your favourite people
We often feel pressure to entertain, but sometimes, the best gift is simply your presence.
Spend time with family and friends without worrying about creating a perfect experience. Walk together, share a meal or watch a favourite Christmas film. The joy of Christmas isn’t in big actions but in simple moments of togetherness.
Focus on gratitude and service
Each day, think of a few things you’re thankful for to keep you in the present.
Small acts of kindness, such as offering a meal to a vulnerable neighbour or volunteering at your local food bank, can also redirect your thoughts.
These simple acts of kindness remind us of God’s love and can help ground you in the true meaning of the festive season.
Book a free taster event to learn more about spirituality!
If you want to explore spirituality more deeply, why not book a free taster event for November and December?
You can choose between two campuses: West Malling in Kent or Southwark in central London – whatever is easiest for you.
Our taster events are the perfect opportunity to sample theological study. You’ll meet our excellent lecturers, sit in on classes and get a real flavour of what makes St Augustine’s College of Theology such a special place.
