Considering joining St Augustine’s as an independent student?
Our independent students come from all kinds of backgrounds, from lawyers to teachers to anyone looking for a career change or a new adventure.
In this blog, you’ll hear real stories from people like you who decided to study theology, many starting with a taster term, and then moving on to the Certificate of Higher Education in Theology, Ministry and Mission.
Watch their videos and find out what drew them to St Augustine’s College of Theology!
‘Studying as an independent student is a great way to find out about ordination pathways’
Patrick Berenger has been a lawyer for 35 years but wants to move into full-time ministry.
‘The great thing about being an independent student is that you talk to people from all different walks of life. Whether they’re training for ordination or lay ministry, we all mix together. It’s a great way of finding out what other paths might be.’
Why a churchwarden chose to study theology as an independent student
Gill Bradnam is a teacher and a churchwarden.
‘I’m now a churchwarden, so I was keen to learn more about theology. I was impressed by the range of courses; there were lots of modules to choose from. I was keen to get more of a grounding in theology that could lead to a whole range of possibilities.
‘At the moment, I’m reflecting and seeing where things go – the course is opening up opportunities for me.’
A finance professional exploring his vocation through theology study
Anthony Ma works in the City.
‘I specialise in financial services regulation, so it’s not very interesting! But I always find my way to faith and want to study theology more.
‘I used to go to Catholic school and took religious studies exams, so I had a decent foundation, but several life events led me back to the Christian faith, which I found even stronger.
‘I’ve always enjoyed studying and want to know some deeper questions about Christianity.’
‘I’m using independent studies to test the waters for being an ordained minister’
Ross Mcrossan works full-time in education with young people with disabilities.
“I’m in my second year as a full-time independent student and working full-time. I’m considering being ordained, but before diving headfirst, I thought I should test the waters.
‘I’m really enjoying studying, regardless of whatever road it takes me down. I know it will benefit my future as an ordained minister.
‘Discernment can be really stressful. It’s nice to have people around who have gone through that experience to support you, and all the students here are so lovely.’
How a Biblical Studies Taster Term led to ordination
Amanda Monkpeak teaches three days a week, alongside being a first-year ordinand.
‘During COVID, I became very interested in Bible study. St Augustine’s was running a taster module on biblical studies, and I thought it would be interesting. Then I just didn’t want to stop! It was so rewarding.
‘Through that, I’ve gone through the discernment process. And after three years of studying as an independent student, I’m now a first-year ordinand.’
