5 inspiring Anglican sites near our theology college in London

If you’re thinking about studying theology in London, there’s something exciting about being right at the heart of it all.

At St Augustine’s College of Theology, we’re lucky to be based in Southwark – a central location that places us among some of the UK’s most iconic Anglican churches and cathedrals.

Here are five sites in Central London that make studying with us even more inspiring.

Southwark Cathedral – a Gothic masterpiece

Just a short walk from London Bridge, Southwark Cathedral is a beautiful Gothic building with soaring columns and pointed archways. It became a cathedral in 1905 when the Diocese of Southwark was established – a diocese with which we’re proud to be closely connected today.

This cathedral is impressive to look at, but it’s also full of life, prayer and people. Many of our students train and serve in the Diocese of Southwark, so this space feels like home to a lot of us.

Interesting fact: Southwark Cathedral has a resident cat called Hodge who helps keep the mice in check. He’s so popular that he even has his own social media accounts!

St Mary’s, Battersea: the oldest church in Battersea

Set right by the River Thames in Wandsworth, St Mary’s Church in Battersea has been a place of Christian worship since around 800AD, making it the oldest church in Battersea.

Today, it remains a lively, welcoming church in the Diocese of Southwark, where worship continues every week. For anyone studying at a theology college in London, it’s a brilliant example of faith that lasts and grows through the centuries.

Interesting fact: The artist and poet William Blake was married here in 1782.

St Paul’s Cathedral: grand and iconic

With its majestic dome and sweeping interior, St Paul’s Cathedral is one of the most recognisable landmarks in London.

Designed by Sir Christopher Wren after the Great Fire of London, St Paul’s still holds daily services and remains a symbol of Christian faith. Studying at a theology college in London, like St Augustine’s, means you can visit – whether for Evensong, prayer, or quiet reflection.

Interesting fact: During World War II, St Paul’s survived the Blitz, even after being struck by a bomb that was defused before it exploded.

Westminster Abbey: a world-famous venue

Tourists, as well as worshippers, flock to Westminster Abbey: It’s where kings and queens are crowned, where state funerals take place, and home to major national services.

As a theology student, visiting the Abbey can bring lessons about liturgy, Anglican heritage, and church history to life.

Interesting fact: Westminster Abbey houses the oldest door in Britain, dating back over 1000 years.

St Martin-in-the-Fields: worship and social justice in the city

Located in Trafalgar Square, St Martin-in-the-Fields is renowned for its commitment to social justice. It’s a great example of how theology and worship can positively impact people’s lives every day.

Whether you attend a concert or learn about their work with people experiencing homelessness, St Martin’s shows what it means to be the Church in the city.

Interesting fact: St Martin’s was the first church in London to broadcast its services live on the radio, starting in the 1920s.
