Learn more about what you’ll study in your formational training

In September 2025, a record number of new ordinands began their training at St Augustine’s College of Theology – we’ve never had so many! It’s an honour to see so many people choosing to be part of our special learning community.

In this blog post, we’re focusing on the types of formal qualifications you work towards as part of your ordination training, and how your study fits around everyday life.

Understanding your training pathway

When you train for ordained ministry at St Augustine’s, you work towards a recognised academic qualification in Theology, Ministry and Mission, validated by Durham University under the Common Awards scheme.

The qualification you choose depends on your background, experience and the length of your training. You’ll talk this through with your diocese and your tutors, but the main options are:

  • Diploma of Higher Education (DipHE) in Theology, Ministry and Mission 
  • BA (Hons) in Theology, Ministry and Mission 
  • Graduate Diploma in Theology, Ministry and Mission (for those who already have a degree) 
  • MA in Theology, Ministry and Mission (for those ready for postgraduate study) 

Each route provides a structured programme covering subject areas such as biblical studies, doctrine, Church history, ethics, mission, spirituality, and reflective practice. You’ll also complete assessed placements in ministry settings out in the community, helping you to put into practice what you learn in the classroom.

Flexible study options

St Augustine’s specialises in non-residential ordination training, which means you can study while staying at home, continue your job and stay involved in your church community. Teaching takes place in London, at our Southwark campus or in Kent, at our West Malling campus, with some modules also available online.

You can train full-time or part-time – it’s up to you. Full-time students usually complete their programme in two or three years, while part-time students spread their learning across a longer period. We’ve designed the teaching timetable to make studying as achievable and accessible as possible, with a mix of teaching days, evening sessions and online learning.

Support for every stage of learning

Students start at St Augustine’s with a wide range of academic experience – some people have previous degrees, while others haven’t studied formally for years. Whatever your background, you’ll find the support you need to help you feel comfortable and confident.

Our student support team can help you with academic writing, study skills and research, and your tutors will provide one-on-one guidance throughout your course. The aim is to help you build confidence in both your learning and your ministry.
