Choosing where to train for ordination

If you’re in the discernment process, deciding where to train for ordination can feel both exciting and overwhelming.

Location is a huge deciding factor – practically and emotionally. At St Augustine’s College of Theology, you can study in central London, peaceful Kent, or a mix of both.

In this blog, we take a closer look at our campuses and how they support people preparing for ministry.

Which type of ordination training college?

When you start exploring ordination training colleges, you’ll quickly notice that the location you study is just as important as the course itself.  Of course, high-quality teaching plays a huge role, but so does where you learn.

Some people thrive in the energy of a city. Others think more easily somewhere quieter.

At St Augustine’s College of Theology, students often say they love having both options.

The college is non-residential, which means you don’t move away to study. Instead, you continue living at home, and many students carry on working alongside their training.

Ordination training in London

Our London Bridge campus sits right in the heart of London, just off Borough High Street.

Although you’re in the middle of London, the building feels calm and tucked away – a quiet space for learning in the middle of a busy city. For students who live or work in London, it’s a really convenient place to study.

The London Bridge campus sits between London Bridge and Borough stations, with excellent bus and tube connections. Inside you’ll find:

  • Modern classrooms
  • Study areas
  • A well-stocked academic library

And just around the corner is the famous Borough Market – a haven for food lovers. Plus, on a clear day, you can see London Bridge nearby. It’s a very real London experience.

Ordination training in Kent

If the London campus offers city energy, the West Malling campus in Kent offers space and serenity.

The campus sits within the beautiful grounds of Malling Abbey, a place of prayer and hospitality for centuries. Founded in 1090 by Bishop Gundulf of Rochester, the abbey is still home to a community of Anglican Benedictine nuns.

The West Malling offers:

  • Quiet study spaces
  • The college’s main library
  • Classrooms set in historic buildings
  • Beautiful grounds for reflection and prayer

Worship often takes place in the Pilgrim Chapel, a beautiful 14th-century chapel nestled among leafy gardens.

Ordination training with a strong sense of community

Just beyond the abbey gates is West Malling, a historic market town with a friendly, relaxed feel. You’ll find lots of independent cafés and restaurants, small shops and local pubs, and a strong sense of community.

Direct trains run from London Victoria, and the station is only a short walk from the abbey. Drivers can also reach the town easily from the M20.

You can explore the West Malling campus here.

Study theology across two locations: London and Kent

One of the things ordination students at St Augustine’s enjoy the most is the contrast

If you usually study in London, you can visit the West Malling campus to study in a quieter setting. Or you might study at West Malling and occasionally experience the energy of the London campus.

Both locations share the same welcoming learning community and supportive teaching for which St Augustine’s College is renowned.
