In the second part of our ordination training blog series, you’ll learn more about Stage 1 of the discernment process.

What is Stage 1 of the discernment process?

The Stage 1 phase is all about talking: deeply personal, reflective and exciting discussions to help you discern your calling and prepare for the next steps. Stage 1 typically lasts 9 to 18 months, depending on your diocese and starts when your vicar feels you’re ready.

The goal here isn’t to make final decisions but to create a supportive space to explore your vocation. Working closely with your Diocesan Director of Ordinands (DDO), you’ll have meaningful conversations and ask and answer challenging questions. You may undertake placements in other parishes or ministries to broaden your experience.

You’ll discuss themes like:

  • What is drawing you to ordained ministry?
  • What do you understand about formational training?
  • How have you been living as a disciple of Jesus?

This stage is an opportunity to dig deep and consider whether priesthood aligns with God’s plans for you.

Exploring your calling through conversations

When you and your DDO agree that you’re ready, Stage 1 officially begins. The process involves six online conversations with Bishop’s Advisors, each lasting about 20 minutes. These discussions are not about passing or failing; they support your discernment and give practical advice on your next steps.

Each conversation focuses on a specific theme:

Your sense of calling

Why do you feel drawn to ordained ministry? Do you understand what ordination training involves?

Understanding the Church

How familiar are you with the Church of England’s traditions and diversity?

Faith and communication

Can you share your faith in ways that inspire and encourage others? Does your faith bring you joy and excitement? How do you talk about your faith in everyday conversation?

Pastoral care

How would you offer compassion and wisdom while maintaining boundaries and safeguarding?

Discipleship

How do you live out your faith and support others on their spiritual journey?

Mission

How do you look out on the world and engage with it?

In these conversations, you may be invited to bring a meaningful object, photo, or news article to discuss, prepare a short talk, or participate in role-play exercises around pastoral care or safeguarding.

Are you ready to progress?

At the end of Stage 1, your advisors will prepare a report for your bishop or DDO. This report will recommend whether you’re ready to move to Stage 2 or suggest areas for further growth, such as gaining more pastoral experience or deepening your theological understanding.

Don’t be discouraged if you’re not immediately recommended for Stage 2. Many candidates use this time to grow their faith and understanding before re-entering the process.

The discernment process is emotionally challenging

Stage 1 can feel deeply vulnerable and intense. Sharing your calling and reflecting on your identity can be overwhelming, but it’s also a wonderful time of growth and discovery.

Lean on the support of trusted mentors, vicar, or spiritual director – they can provide encouragement and wisdom whenever needed. Remember, this process isn’t about judgment but exploring who God is calling you to be.
