Learn why the Biblical Studies taster term is so popular
If you’ve ever been curious about how the Bible was written and how to read it more deeply, you’re not alone.
Our Introduction to Biblical Studies taster term is the most popular taster course at St Augustine’s College of Theology.
Whether you’re exploring a call to ministry or want to try theology study, this three-month course is a fantastic way to begin.
‘People want to understand the Bible more deeply’
Tutor Jenny Corcoran teaches Lay Education, Practical Theology and Old Testament, says there’s a genuine desire to learn more about the Bible:
‘Our Introduction to Biblical Studies is our most popular taster module. Everyone in some way has encountered the Bible, and maybe they want to understand it more deeply.
‘They want to understand how they can learn about what people have written about the Bible and how that fits alongside their practice of devotional reading. It’s a great opportunity to bring those things and hold them together.’

A supportive place to study theology
Many students begin the course wondering if theology study is right for them.
Melissa Lavin joined the Biblical Studies taster term while discerning a call to ministry:
‘I chose the (Biblical Studies) taster term to see what it would be like to study theology. Even though I feel called to ministry, I wanted to see if I could cope – and it was amazing! The staff are really supportive and friendly, and now I feel St Augustine’s is like a family.’
If it’s been a while since you studied, or this is your first time learning theology, you’ll be supported every step of the way. All taster students are offered extra help from tutors, including additional sessions to build confidence.
Ordinand Hannah Morris found the support invaluable:
‘I was in the discernment process with Canterbury Diocese, and my DDO suggested St Augustine’s for a taster module – it had been a while since I’d studied. I thought, why not give it a try and see how I get on? The welcome was amazing, and being able to discuss it with other people was really helpful.’

MA student Julius Zubair started with the taster term and never looked back:
‘One of the advisors said: ‘Why don’t you take the taster module and see if you want to continue?’ So, having taken the taster module, I felt it was good to continue.’
