If you have an interest in St Augustine’s, considering a programme of study here, or if your Director of Ordinands has encouraged you to check us out, please don’t hesitate to contact us. In the interests of our health and yours, we have moved our classes and other contacts online until COVID-19 is no longer a danger. An Important Announcement

Mar 18 Posted by Alan Gregory. Under From the Principal,

We are currently following measures designed to combat the spread of COVID-19. From now on, our teaching will move online and all students and staff should consult ‘Moodle’ to find more information (log in at the bottom of this page). For anyone interested in learning about the college or thinking about applying to study here, please see the notice, “Still Open for Enquirers.” Be wise, do all you can to stay well, help others where you can, and keep in prayer.

A Funny Time of Year: More Seasonal Thoughts from Lindsay Llewellyn-Macduff

Dec 22 Posted by Alan Gregory. Under Sermons and Talks,

Advent is a funny time of year, a time of contrasts that jar and vie for priority: Society at large turns its attention to more important things of life (friends, family, identity, and often some sense of spirituality) whilst at the same time spinning on the frantic axle of sales, keeping up with the Joneses, tatt and the grinding encounter of the generous impulse with budgetary necessity. Most of the world celebrates family and friends, while the lonely and the bereaved feel the weight of sorrow doubled. The Church begins her New Year and focuses…

Are You Ready for Christmas? Some seasonal questions by Harvey Howlett

Dec 22 Posted by Alan Gregory. Under Sermons and Talks,

A friend recently posted, complaining about the Band Aid song ‘Do they know its Christmas time at all?’ and how he had suddenly been stuck by the arrogance of the question “Do they know its Christmas?” for a song originally written to address a drought in Ethiopia, home of one of the Ancient Christian Churches. But, halfway through the season of Advent, and being asked for some thoughts about Advent, I began to wonder if it is perhaps the question we are more directly faced with here and now. Do we know its Christmas? Of…

Congratulations!

Dec 14 Posted by Alan Gregory. Under Latest News,

We are delighted to announce that the Rev’d Dr Simon Stocks, our Tutor for Biblical Studies and Director of Reader Training, has achieved the laudable status of a Senior Fellow of the Higher Education Academy. This recognition follows assessment of his professional practice in higher education, and in particular of his support, management and mentoring of others in relation to teaching and learning. Simon’s status as Senior Fellow reflects his sustained effectiveness as a tutor throughout his seven years at the college. It also endorses the college’s alignment with the values of the HEA, including…

Beginning the New Year!

Oct 4 Posted by Alan Gregory. Under Latest News,

The summer seems to have passed away an age ago. On the 16th September, we held our Induction Day for sixty-four new students, our highest intake ever! Saju Muthalai and Sue Jeffs lead us in a very fine reflection on diversity and the unconscious biases that shape our relationships with others. Necessary to finding our way around the world, since otherwise we’d treat every encounter as if it was the first one in our lives, such biases also lie at the root of misunderstanding, unintentional hurtfulness, confusion, and conflict, as well as the cruelties of…

Don’t Forget We’re Still Here…

Jul 25 Posted by Alan Gregory. Under Latest News,

Summertime has arrived, so, as the song says, “the livin’ is easy.” Not altogether accurate, of course, since over the next few weeks St Augustine’s office at Malling is open, as is the library. Holidays take some of us away some of the time but one or two of the staff will always remain to keep the place going. If you have a hour or two, then, please come and visit. Browse the library, read in the grounds, pray in the chapel, study in the Guest House, or talk to the teddy bears in my…

Sermon from Induction Weekend, 25th September 2016

Jul 25 Posted by Alan Gregory. Under Sermons and Talks,

About forty-four miles east of Dallas is a town called Blank. I spent a night there once. A random, wretched, shabby huddle, dumped by the highway: gas station, general store, Dairy Queen, a few abandoned cars, empty skips, and the Blank motel. The sort of ugliness it takes years to create. I imagine that if you live in Blank, you need an alibi. “Where do I come from? Oh, Dallas, well, near Dallas, anyway.” Perhaps the people of Blank wonder how they got there, perhaps they sit over undercooked hash browns and bitter coffee, tracing…
